Candidates for the San Luis Bay Chapter of Surfrider Foundation
On Friday, March 5th, we will be voting in new executive board members for the San Luis Bay Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. Candidates were selected via nomination at the January and February meetings. These folks are running unopposed because there were no other nominees. Last minute nominations (with a second by another member) can still be sent in to me,
if received before 5pm Friday. The candidate statements are listed here:
As chair, my endeavor will remain being involved and committed to encouraging active members to embrace creativity, collaboration and cooperation in whatever volunteer capacities they are able to attend to. The SLO Surfrider team can make progress, make a difference, and oftentimes win when we work together, talk to each other, and talk to others about the work we are doing. Remember to invite those you talk to along for the adventure!
I grew up on the East Coast in an avid waterman family who were environmentally conscious. Back in those days, our garbage was dumped in the ocean and when waste of all sorts started floating in with the tide, it was obvious something was very wrong. Fast forward many years and I, my surfer husband and water loving children moved to Los Osos where we encountered the sewer issues... I discovered our local Surfrider Chapter and not only found out how to make a difference, I found out how to make an effective difference while keeping a good attitude and having fun.
I have really enjoyed working with all of the Surfrider volunteers and hope to be elected to the executive committee to use what I have learned in order to continue making strides in educating our communities and increasing involvement in protecting our precious ocean resource.
I am an elementary teacher and surfer, and I am equally passionate about both! I joined Surfrider to help find a solution to the water pollution problem in Pismo Beach. I have coordinated fundraising events including StokeFest and International Surfing Day. I have spoken publicly for Surfrider at several City Council meetings, and have been an integral part of creating awareness in our local community.
For the past three years, I have served as the Los Osos Representative for Surfrider Foundation San Luis Bay Chapter. Additionally, I am involved with Ocean Plastics awareness as well as the expansion of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary for protection of our coastal waters. I am very excited about my nomination for Treasurer on the EC as a way to be more involved with all of our issues and events.
Below is a brief summary of my experience with SLB Surfrider during the past three years:
Regular attendance at EC/General Meetings
Los Osos Representative for Surfrider on the LOWWP:
Attendance and speaking on behalf of Surfrider at the SLO County Board of Supervisors, RWQCB, OCP, & CCC LOWWP hearings and/or Gen'l Public Comment
Surfrider Rep for the Appropriate Technologies Coalition
In attendance for many of our fundraising events
Attendance at the Surfrider Regional Conference '09 & '10
It is a rare and precious experience to work collaboratively with others on common passions, cares and concerns. SLB Surfrider has become my posse, my fellow fishy friends with big hearts, and I have been given back to threefold in spirit, vim and verve and I want to give all the more!
California is the only state I've ever lived, and I've been privileged to work with the Monterey and San Luis Bay chapters. For the last year, I have served as the SLB chapter's Volunteer Coordinator, a supportive role where I'm able to inform and organize. In that time, I have served as a voting member at many meetings and several conference calls; I've attended Pismo City Council meetings, and volunteered at many chapter sponsored events. I've learned a lot during that time, and I'm ready to learn more.
I feel our county has a bright future. As Volunteer Coordinator and as a member of the Executive Committee, I hope to contribute to Surfrider by helping members to stay informed and engaged. I also hope to stoke membership and sponsorship through continued outreach. As a grassroots organization, there's no one more important than the volunteer, and there's no pride that runs deeper than ours.
